Know the Difference Between Linear and Two-way Communication Model

The statement cannot be agreed upon as there is a fundamental difference between a linear model of communication and a two-way communication process. To understand the difference, we first need to know the models itself.
Linear communication model:
In the linear model or the one-way model of communication, where sender encodes the message and sends it through the channel to the receiver. Upon receiving the message, the receiver decodes it and gives an innate response to the perceived message. Ex. Message sent through the radio or tv.

Two-way communication model:
In this type of communication model, the sender and the receiver exchange messages between them where they both take turns to send or receive messages. Ex. Phone, email, etc.
So, if we carefully understand the basic concept behind both the models, we can conclude that the two-way model builds upon the linear model of communication.

  • The two-way communication technique is quite recent as compared to the linear mode of communication.
  • The linear process is quite incomplete as it doesn’t complete the circle of conversation. In this process, the sender does not come to know that whether the receiver or not had understood the message.  Whereas in a two-way process the receiver receives the message, encodes it, understands and send his/her feedback message back to the original sender.
  • Due to its one-way path, the linear messages are inapplicable to have a direct human communication, and it is mostly used for the one-way mass communication. On the other hand, the two-way process is built upon receiver's ‘Feedback’ and having a direct human connection.
  • In a linear model, the identity of both the sender as well as the receiver is uncertain. This has made it less relevant in the today’s time. As specially when the identity of the receiver is uncertain, the sender can send the message only by the assumption of the level of acceptance and the effectiveness of the message by the unknown receiver. This has the overall negative effect on the motive of the communication. In the two-way process of communication, the feedback helps to understand and identify the receiver and which eventually helps sender to modify the message to be sent according to the receiver's level of understanding and acceptance.
  • In a  one-way, communication measuring the effectiveness of the message is not at all possible as there is no source of getting feedback from the receiver. Whereas in a two-way communication the effectiveness of every message can be instantly judged, and the subsequent discussion between the two can be more comprehensive and meaningful.

So, in there is a huge difference between the linear process of communication and the two-way process regarding fundamental concept, the level of effectiveness and the reach.
